Changing the Marquee Outside HA! Comedy Club in 2006

The job was ordinary; the setting made it unmistakably New York.

In 2006, I came across a worker changing the marquee outside HA! Comedy Club in New York City. He stood on the sidewalk using a long pole to reach the illuminated sign above the entrance, while two pedestrians passed through the edge of the frame. The club’s oversized “HA!” sign towered overhead, and the marquee below advertised comedy for three dollars—a small detail that now gives the photograph an unmistakable period feel.

I liked the layers in the scene. The worker is small compared with the architecture and signage, yet his action becomes the centre of the photograph. Around him, illuminated lettering, dark windows, stonework and storefronts create the visual density I associate with Manhattan streets.

Black and white simplified everything. It turned the bright signs into blocks of light, deepened the shadows in the building facade and kept attention on gesture, typography and structure rather than colour.

Street photography often depends on noticing the work behind the spectacle. Someone has to change the sign, replace the letters, keep the doors open and prepare the city for whatever happens next. For a few seconds, that routine task became the scene.

That is what interested me: not the performance inside the comedy club, but the quiet maintenance outside it, happening in full view while New York continued moving around it.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
