Times Square Black and White Street Photography | New York City

Pedestrians and Taxis Beneath Manhattan’s Towering Signs

Times Square was doing what it does best—filling every part of the frame. I was standing at a crosswalk in New York City in 2005, with pedestrians moving through the intersection, taxis edging across the street and layers of illuminated signs climbing above them.

The scene pulled me in because there was almost too much happening at once. A lone pedestrian crosses through the foreground, a white taxi cuts across behind, crowds gather along the sidewalks and the avenue narrows into a dense corridor of traffic and light. Everything overlaps, yet somehow the photograph still holds together.

Black and white changed the scene completely. Without the colour of Times Square competing for attention, the structure of the city becomes much stronger. Buildings, windows, billboards, streetlights and people begin to stack into one complicated urban pattern. The signs are still unmistakably Times Square, but they become shapes and tones rather than a wall of competing colour.

Looking at it now, I also like how firmly the photograph belongs to its period. The advertising, vehicles and storefronts make it a visual record of Times Square in the mid-2000s, while the constant movement of people and traffic feels completely familiar.

For me, this is New York street photography at its most recognizable: crowded, layered, restless and full of small moments happening at the same time.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
