Statue of Liberty at Night Black and White Photography
An Illuminated Torch Above Layers of Dark Harbour Clouds
I waited as the evening light faded around the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor. Clouds were moving across the sky, and I wanted the illuminated figure to sit naturally within that changing darkness. This black and white photograph brings the statue forward against layered clouds, with the raised torch marking the highest bright point.
The vertical composition gives the full figure room, from the crown and lifted arm down to the folds of the robe and the upper part of the pedestal. Light catches the face, the tablet, and the drapery in different ways, so the statue holds more detail than its familiar outline alone. Behind it, pale breaks between the darker clouds create a second pattern that crosses the frame horizontally.
I am often drawn back to this monument when I visit New York, but I still have to respond to the light I find on each occasion. On this evening I stayed with the scene until the illumination and the sky felt balanced. The darkness around the statue gives its form a clear presence without separating it from the weather overhead. I like being able to follow the smaller details in the crown and robe, then step back and see the entire figure held against that broad, unsettled sky.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
