Manhattan Skyline Beyond Waterfront Pilings | Long Exposure Photography

Rows of Old Pilings Lead Across Smooth Water Towards Manhattan

Rows of short wooden pilings extend across smooth water towards the Manhattan skyline. I photographed this view from Brooklyn Bridge Park in 2019, using a long exposure to soften the river while keeping the weathered posts and distant buildings clear. The black and white treatment connects the close waterfront detail with the much larger city beyond.

The pilings do much of the compositional work. Their uneven tops and dark sides create a repeated pattern that narrows towards the centre of the photograph. Each post is different, but together they offer a strong route through the foreground. Around them, the softened water becomes a quiet surface, allowing those irregular shapes to remain distinct.

Across the river, Manhattan forms a compact band of towers. Their straight edges contrast with the rough timber, while the trees along the right shoreline add a third texture. I kept a broad area of sky above the city so the buildings would retain their scale without crowding the top of the frame. The wide view gives both the foreground and the skyline room to matter.

Long exposure was useful here because it changed the water’s appearance without erasing the structure of the scene. The posts still carry their rough surfaces, and the skyline remains recognisable, but the space between them feels quieter. For me, that balance is the reason to linger: old timber in the near water, a dense city in the distance and a softened river holding the two parts together.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
