Brooklyn Bridge Black and White Photography | New York City
East River Boardwalk Leading Toward the Manhattan Skyline
The empty benches are what slow this scene down for me. They give the photograph a human scale without needing a person in the frame. From the wooden East River boardwalk, the Brooklyn Bridge rises across the composition while the Manhattan skyline sits beyond it, all rendered in black and white under a broad, overcast sky.
I made the photograph in New York City in 2005. What still holds my attention is the layering. The boardwalk pulls forward from the bottom edge, the railing follows the river, and the bridge cuts across the frame on a long diagonal before reaching the far tower. The skyline is present, but it never overwhelms the bridge. Everything seems to lead somewhere.
Black and white felt natural for a scene built so heavily around stone, steel, wood, water and sky. Without colour competing for attention, the suspension cables become almost a drawing across the upper half of the image. The bridge tower feels heavier, the benches more graphic, and the soft water provides a quieter counterpoint to all that structure.
New York is usually photographed through movement and density. Here, what interests me is the opposite. The boardwalk is open, the benches are empty, and the city across the East River feels slightly removed. It is still unmistakably New York, but for a moment the architecture has room to breathe.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
