Manhattan Door With Handwritten Memory Message Black and White Photography

Chalk Words Beside a Repeating Metal Security Grille

“The memory of you is never lost upon me.” Those handwritten words made me stop at this Manhattan doorway. The worn trim, patched door and brickwork already offered plenty of texture, but the message changed what held my attention. I photographed the entrance while walking in the city, keeping the neighbouring storefront grille within the frame.

The doorway and grille form two distinct parts of the picture. On the left, a dark door marked 149 sits between tall moulded panels. Pale chalk lettering crosses its lower section, above a small projecting fitting. On the right, the security grille repeats a wave-like pattern from top to bottom, with objects partly visible in the shadows behind it.

I cannot know the story behind the words, and that openness is part of what I find moving about the scene. The message is personal, yet it has been left in public view on an ordinary city door. The photograph holds it together with the scratched surfaces and metalwork, allowing the words to belong to the place where I found them.

Black and white concentrates attention on the writing, the curved door detail and the regular grille pattern. For someone drawn to New York street photography with a quieter human presence, this print offers both a clear visual arrangement and a line worth returning to. The surrounding architecture gives the message a physical setting without explaining away its meaning.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
