Roof Terraces and Spired Towers Within a Dense City Grid
From above Manhattan, the rooftops become almost as prominent as the building fronts. This black and white photograph looks down into a dense section of New York City, where tall rectangular towers rise between lower blocks, terraces and narrow streets. I left the sky outside the frame so the city fills the view from edge to edge.
A pointed tower near the upper centre and a clock face farther right break the repeated grid of windows. Around them, buildings vary in height and shape, with light catching some facades while others sit in deep shadow. That uneven distribution is part of what interests me about the view: the streets are ordered, but the buildings create a much less regular pattern above them.
The closest rooftops reveal smaller details, including raised structures, railings and open spaces that would be difficult to notice from the street. Farther away, the same elements merge into a fine texture. I wanted the photograph to hold both scales, letting the eye move from individual buildings to the larger concentration of architecture.
New York is a city I have returned to many times, and an elevated view still changes how I see it. Here, the monochrome treatment emphasizes the layers of light and shadow rather than separating buildings by colour. The result feels compact and full of detail. I keep finding another roofline or narrow gap between towers, even after following the main spires through the frame.
