I remember sitting in the Serengeti on a quiet, wind-brushed morning when this old male lion settled into the grass just a few metres from our vehicle. There was nothing dramatic about the moment—no hunt, no roar, no tension—just a weathered king catching his breath. That’s what pulled me in. With lions, the stillness can be more powerful than the spectacle, and this portrait is one of those rare pauses where you feel like you’re seeing the real animal rather than the myth.

The Serengeti has a way of stripping everything down to essentials. Out here, you see age, survival, and authority written into every feature. This lion’s mane was wild and uneven, shaped by heat, dust, and years of territorial disputes. His face carried a map of scars, none exaggerated, each one telling its own quiet story. What caught me most was the expression—steady, observant, and slightly worn, as if he was keeping one part of his attention on the plains while giving the rest to his thoughts.

The light was soft and diffused, the kind of light that works beautifully with monochrome. There’s a natural gentleness to it, soft highlights around the mane and deeper shadows along the contours of his jaw. The grass around him forms a textured frame, not competing with the portrait but grounding him in the environment that shaped him. Shooting in monochrome allowed all of that to surface—the detail in the fur, the curve of the muzzle, and the subtle tones that give this portrait its depth.

This image isn’t meant to be loud or aggressive. If anything, I leaned into the quieter side of his character. Many people imagine lions as constant action, but the truth is that these moments of reflection are what define their everyday lives. Out here, with space stretching endlessly around him, he looked less like a predator and more like a monarch surveying land he has defended for years. It’s a side of the Serengeti that often goes unseen, and it’s the side that stayed with me.

I find that images like this work beautifully as wall art because they carry a sense of presence without overwhelming a room. The tones are gentle, the textures rich, and the lion’s expression has a grounding quality—the kind of artwork you can live with for years because it keeps offering something new each time you pause in front of it.
