Collapsed Prairie Barn Black and White Rural Photography
A Buckled Roof Beside Small Outbuildings and Trees
One end of this old prairie barn still has a clear peaked outline, while the roof farther along has buckled into a jumble of boards. That uneven shape drew me to photograph the building in black and white. It stands among grasses and other small farm structures, with trees rising behind the roof and open sky above.
The surviving gable gives the eye somewhere to begin. Its shingled wall and narrow door are comparatively orderly, making the collapsed section beside it more striking. Here, the roof bends downward and pieces of wood overlap at different angles. I was interested in keeping both parts together: the recognizable form of a barn and the place where that form starts to break apart.
Around the main structure, smaller buildings and a rail fence establish the setting. They sit farther back and draw a quieter line across the image. In the foreground, the rough growth has its own dense texture, very different from the repeating shingles. The monochrome treatment allows these surfaces to stand alongside one another without colour becoming the main point of comparison.
I often find myself stopping at weathered rural buildings because their shapes are so particular. This barn has a strong left edge and an increasingly irregular right one, with little of the symmetry a sound building would have. The photograph keeps that imbalance intact. There is still enough sky and space around it to see the whole setting, but it is the folded roof and exposed wood that keep bringing my attention back.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
