OsloMet Illuminated Tree Black and White Night Photography

A Bright Canopy Above a Dark Trunk in Fog

During a night walk through Oslo, I came across this tree-shaped light installation at OsloMet. Its canopy was glowing through the fog, with hundreds of small points of light outlining the branches. I photographed it in black and white, keeping the dark trunk at the centre and letting the illuminated form occupy most of the frame.

What drew me in was the difference between the solid centre and the brightness around it. The trunk divides into broad limbs that remain almost black, while the finer shapes above them gather into a dense crown of light. Some parts are sharply defined; others soften into the surrounding haze. Beneath the tree, the pale ground gives the base a quiet place to stand.

I left enough of the campus visible to keep that light connected to its setting. The OsloMet sign glows at the left, while the low building behind it mostly disappears into shadow. It is a small reminder that this striking form belongs in the middle of a city, encountered on foot during an ordinary walk.

The photograph stays close to the contrast that made me stop: a familiar tree shape transformed by illumination and weather. Its bright canopy has an intricate texture, yet the overall composition is simple. Against the fog and dark sky, the installation seems to hold a small patch of night open around itself.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
