Bright Headlights Meet Mist Beneath a Row of Windows
Tram 131 provides a bright, sharply described subject within this misty Oslo street. I photographed the scene in 2023, drawn to the light around the tram and its reflections on the wet road. The vehicle sits against a long facade of windows and doorways, with overhead wires tracing diagonals through the darker upper part of the frame.
The front of the tram faces slightly toward the camera. Its headlights create pale reflections beneath it, while the lit windows along its side carry the eye farther into the street. A line of lamps extends into the mist behind the vehicle. I like the contrast between the clearly visible tram and the less definite distance, where separate lights begin to merge.
Rails and road markings give the foreground another set of lines. The wet surface turns them into part of a larger pattern of light and dark, with a narrow pale strip beside the pavement. On the right, the building’s repeated windows establish a steady backdrop, making the tram’s illuminated front feel especially distinct.
Black and white connects these elements through tone, bringing out the strong geometry of the vehicle and the softer glow around the street lamps. This photograph can appeal to someone who enjoys trams, city transport or atmospheric European streets. It offers a recognisable piece of everyday Oslo life within a quiet night setting, with enough detail in the facade and rails to keep the view engaging after the first look.
