Tufa Towers Reflected Beneath a Warm Morning Sky
I was at Mono Lake before dawn, standing among the tufa formations in the cold and waiting for the light to change. This photograph came together as warmth spread along the horizon and the still water began to reflect the sky. Orange and pink settle behind the dark, textured towers, fading upwards into a cooler blue.
The central group has an irregular outline, with narrow points rising above a broader base. A separate formation in the left foreground gives the scene depth, while smaller towers farther back show how the shapes continue through the lake. I kept space between them so that each could remain distinct against the water.
Their reflections are softer than the formations themselves. Slight ripples stretch the darker tones downwards, mixing them with the warm colour from the sky. Along the distant shore, a low veil of mist adds another quiet layer without hiding the horizon.
What I remember most about that morning is the patience it asked for. The scene did not arrive all at once; it developed through small changes in light and reflection. I wanted the print to retain that sense of stillness, with enough surface detail to reward time spent looking. The warm horizon and cooler water give the photograph a balanced colour presence for a living space or bedroom. It is a view of Mono Lake centred on the relationship between its unusual rock forms and the gentle light of early morning.
