Muted Grasses and Bare Branches Beside Misty Water
Muted browns and soft greens held this Haliburton wetland together on a misty morning. I photographed the bare branches rising from the grasses, with still water and scattered lily pads in front. The colour stays subdued, letting the thin tree shapes stand out against a forest that becomes less distinct through the haze.
I was drawn to the way the land meets the water. Clumps of grass form an uneven edge, with small openings between them that lead farther into the scene. Their warm tones sit above a darker surface, where the pale lily pads make a loose pattern. The view feels layered even within a close section of the swamp.
The bare stems give that softer setting a few firm lines. One curves upward from the left, while narrower branches rise near the centre and right. Behind them, the forest is much denser. I kept that darker background because it separates the fine branches from the foliage without needing a bright sky around them.
Wetlands often make me slow down and look at the spaces between things. Here, the autumn grasses, small patches of open water and mist-softened trees each have a different texture. I wanted to keep their quiet relationship in the photograph, with enough colour to carry the warmth of the grasses and enough depth for the forest to remain a presence beyond the water.
