Foggy Newfoundland Lake Island Black and White Photography
Rock and Evergreen Trees Emerging From Layers of Mist
I turned the car around for this view. While driving one of Newfoundland's long roads in 2025, I noticed the forest appearing in layers through the fog. After finding a safe place to stop, I made several photographs before the atmosphere changed. This black and white view holds a rocky island clearly against a much softer shore.
The island occupies the lower part of the composition, with fractured boulders at its edge and evergreen trees above them. A small tree toward the left breaks away from the denser growth. I liked the irregular shape of the land, particularly where the rough stone meets the calm water.
Behind it, the forest gradually loses definition. The nearer trees remain readable, but the ridge farther back almost disappears into pale grey. That transition gives the photograph depth without requiring strong sunlight or a dramatic sky. The island's reflection is softened by faint ripples, extending its darker form into the quieter foreground.
I wanted to preserve the difference between solid rock and a landscape becoming difficult to see. Monochrome lets that contrast carry the image, bringing out the stone's texture while keeping the fog gentle. What I remember from the drive is the changing visibility, and this view makes it tangible. It brings a restrained Canadian landscape into a room, with a clear central form and details that emerge gradually rather than all at once.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
