A Blurred Couple in St Mark’s Square | Venice Night Photography
Soft Figures Against the Illuminated Venetian Square
The couple in the foreground is softly blurred, while the illuminated architecture of St Mark's Square remains sharply drawn behind them. I photographed this Venice night scene in black and white, letting that difference become its central feature. The figures feel fleeting against the long arcade, the basilica, and the dark sky above the square.
The paving gives the image a strong foreground. Its repeated blocks lead toward the buildings and provide a clear surface beneath the two people. They stand slightly right of centre, large enough to hold attention but small enough to remain part of the broader view.
Along the left side, rows of lights and arches recede toward the far end of the square. I like the way that bright rhythm guides the eye across the frame. The more intricate façade beyond introduces a different texture, while the tall tower at the right creates a firm edge to the composition.
Other figures appear as softer traces in the distance. The square is open, but it is not empty. That balance matters to me: the nighttime view has room and stillness, yet the people keep it connected to a living city.
What I return to is the contrast in permanence suggested by the photograph. The buildings hold their edges; the couple does not. For someone drawn to Venice after dark, this image offers the familiar square through a more intimate moment, with two indistinct figures giving the architecture a human scale.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
