New Zealand Waterfall Spray Photography in Black and White
Bright Falling Water Breaks Into Mist Against Dark Rock
I kept this photograph close to the waterfall’s base, where the falling water breaks into a bright cloud of spray. Made during my journey through New Zealand, the black and white image leaves out the wider landscape and concentrates on water, mist and the dark cliff behind them. The result is almost abstract, but the movement remains unmistakable.
The main fall forms a broad pale streak through the centre-left of the frame. Beside it, smaller streams follow the rock face, appearing and disappearing behind the mist. I am drawn to those differences: the dense white water has a forceful shape, while the fine spray makes the boundaries less certain. Through the darker areas, glimpses of the cliff give the water something solid to work against.
A narrow strip of rippled surface runs along the bottom. It is a small part of the photograph, yet it provides an important change in texture after the softer falling water above. I chose monochrome to bring these relationships forward, from the brightest spray to the dark channels in the rock. There is no need for a distant horizon to explain the setting; the close view has its own scale and energy. As a print, it suits someone drawn to dramatic natural detail, with enough tonal variety to keep revealing smaller currents and edges each time I look.
