Whenever I find myself in Venice, I end up lingering along the water without even meaning to. The Grand Canal has a way of pulling you in, and on this particular day, the air carried that soft, moody brightness Venice does so well. The sky was overcast enough to smooth the highlights, yet still open enough to drape the entire city in an even, gentle light. It’s the kind of atmosphere where every architectural detail becomes more pronounced, and the city starts to feel timeless.

From this vantage point, the dome of Santa Maria della Salute rises like a sculptural anchor on the left, its rhythm of curves and towers giving the scene a steady centre of gravity. That building has a presence—solid, historic, absolutely unmistakable. Then the composition stretches across the canal toward the Campanile in the distance, which seems like a compass needle, guiding your eye deeper into Venice. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve photographed this city, but each time I line up a scene like this, something inside me slows down. Venice has that effect.

Down at water level, the energy shifts entirely. Boats carve light ripples across the surface, each wake adding its own small story to the moment. I remember watching them glide through the frame as I stood with my camera, letting the movement balance the weight of the architecture. That contrast—motion and stillness—makes this city endlessly fascinating to photograph. You get layers of history, patterns of stonework, worn facades, and then suddenly a speedboat darts through the scene like a signature under everything old.

The monochrome treatment brings out the textures in a way colour can’t. You start noticing the tonal separation between stone and water, the weathering on the walls, and the subtle gradient of the sky. Venice often feels like it’s half-floating, half-fading into history, and black and white reinforces that sense of continuity. It doesn’t matter how many years pass—scenes like this remain unmistakably Venetian.

I’ve spent a lot of time travelling through Italy, but this city always stands apart. It’s a place where you can wander for hours, step onto a vaporetto at random, or sit above the water and watch the day unwind. There’s a sense of quiet drama here—never loud, always atmospheric—that keeps pulling me back with my camera.
