Dark Rock Rising Above an Open White Foreground
A wide white foreground gives these Antarctic peaks room to stand apart. Dark rock appears through the snow on the mountain faces, while a few low exposed stones interrupt the otherwise pale ground. I like how the scene holds a strong mountain shape without filling every part of the photograph with detail.
The larger peak on the left has a broken outline, with steep dark sections beside channels of snow. Across the middle, a paler slope leads toward the smaller peaks on the right. The light sky merges gently with the snow near the highest areas, making the exposed rock especially important to reading the landscape.
I photographed this view in Antarctica in 2011. The foreground rock near the centre-right gives the eye a small place to pause before moving toward the mountains. Its rounded form contrasts with their steeper faces. I like that change in scale, from a low stone close at hand to the much larger slopes behind it, all held within a restrained range of pale and dark tones.
