Boy in a Tuscan Festival Parade Monochrome Photography
A Small Smile Among White Hats and Costumes
Among the white hats and loose parade costumes, one boy turns toward the camera with a small smile. I photographed him at a village wine festival in Tuscany in 2010. The black and white treatment lets his darker eyes and painted moustache stand out within the pale clothing around him.
I was touring Tuscany when the festival moved into the village streets as a parade. Groups passed through the crowd in matching outfits, and this brief encounter gave me a quieter image within the larger celebration. I kept the other participants close around the boy so that his portrait still belongs to that moment in the procession.
His broad hat frames his face, while the people behind him look in other directions. A taller figure at the right and another participant at the left create two soft boundaries. Below his face, the folds of the smock lead toward his hands and the dark handle he is holding. That darker line gives the lower half of the photograph some weight.
The composition depends on small differences within an almost entirely light scene. Fabric, skin and hat each catch the light differently, and his gaze supplies the clear point of contact. I like the way the portrait holds a passing expression without losing the festival setting. It offers a gentle human presence for a reading space or living room, especially for someone drawn to candid portraits and everyday encounters while travelling.
