A Small Flock Beside a Fence Above Layered Romanian Pastures
Pale sheep gather beside a rough wooden fence on a steep hillside near Brasov, Romania. Beyond them, pasture and woodland rise through several layers towards a darker ridge. In this black and white photograph, made in 2011, I wanted the flock and the surrounding countryside to share the scene rather than treating the animals as an isolated subject.
The slope gives the foreground its direction. Fence rails run diagonally across the frame, and the sheep interrupt that line with their softer, uneven shapes. Several stand together, others remain apart, and one rests closer to the camera. Those differences make the flock worth looking at before the eye follows the land into the distance.
Monochrome draws out the contrast between pale wool and darker grass. It also connects the fence, scattered homes and patches of trees within a single range of tones. As the hills recede, their detail becomes less distinct, which lets the photograph suggest depth without depending on a dramatic sky. The large area of countryside above the animals keeps their scale clear.
I find the small divisions in the distant fields as interesting as the more immediate flock. Individual trees, tiny roofs and changing bands of woodland gradually become visible with closer attention. Together, they show a landscape shaped by both its contours and its everyday use. This pastoral photograph has a quiet, grounded presence, with the sheep providing an inviting starting point for exploring the Romanian hills beyond.
