Dark Shutters and a Small Figure Above the Stone Road
The cobblestones curve around a large corner building before the street falls away between closely spaced walls. A balcony projects overhead, a lantern hangs beside it, and dark shutters repeat along the weathered plaster. I photographed this Tivoli street in 2024 while walking through the town, drawn to the ordinary details rather than a famous landmark.
There is a small human presence among those details: a woman leaning from an open window. She is easy to miss when the building and roadway first catch the eye. I like that gradual discovery. Her position above the street gives the architecture scale and turns the scene into a moment of everyday life as well as a study of surfaces.
I worked the image in restrained toned monochrome to bring out the cracked plaster, stained walls and patterned pavement. Cables and drainpipes remain visible, along with flowerpots and the iron balcony. These imperfections are part of what interested me. The buildings seemed to fit closely around one another, and the curve of the road provided a natural way to follow them through the frame.
This vertical photograph would suit a room built around neutral colours, wood or stone, or a collection of Italian travel images. From a distance, the corner facade and sweeping cobblestones give it a strong structure. At closer range, the smaller features emerge, offering a more personal view of a street that people continue to inhabit.
