Carved Stone Balustrades Rise Toward Rows of Tall Windows

The street has more than one level, and that is what makes this view interesting to me. On Mariacka Street in Gdańsk’s Old Town, Poland, steps rise from the paving toward raised shopfronts, with carved stone and iron railings linking one entrance to the next. I used black and white to keep those layers clear against the tall façades behind them.

The broad windows establish an orderly pattern above the shops. Below, the scene is less regular: staircases turn at different points, decorated posts interrupt the railings, and a lower doorway opens beneath one terrace. I like the way those small changes give the architecture a rhythm without making every section look the same.

Souvenir displays and pale umbrellas add another layer close to the buildings. They show the street as a place in use, with shop activity sitting among the older architectural details. I kept them in the frame because they help explain how the raised entrances relate to the pavement.

The foreground remains relatively open. That space gives the steps a clear starting point and lets the eye move upward through the carved stone toward the windows. The composition is busy with detail, but the repeated shapes keep it readable.

For me, this is an architectural street photograph with a close sense of place. Its interest lies in the changing levels and surfaces of Mariacka Street, bringing the texture of Gdańsk’s Old Town into a room without relying on a distant skyline.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
