One World Trade Center Above the Hudson | Monochrome Photograph
A Tall Manhattan Landmark Beneath Sweeping Streaks of Cloud
One World Trade Center rises into a generous sweep of sky in this black and white Manhattan photograph. I made the image from across the Hudson in 2017, giving the tower enough distance to sit within the surrounding skyline while still allowing its slender profile and spire to lead the composition.
That step back is an important part of how I photograph New York. From the street, individual buildings can fill the view; from across the water, their relationships become clearer. Here, lower blocks form a dense foundation beneath the central tower, with squared and rounded rooflines creating changes in height. A narrow strip of trees marks the waterfront, and the rippled river supplies an open foreground.
I waited for softer shadows and light along the glass surfaces. The resulting monochrome treatment makes those differences easy to follow: bright reflections sit beside darker grids of windows, and the tower’s pale faces remain distinct against the cloud. Above it, the long streaks in the sky spread outwards rather than repeating the rigid lines below. That contrast gives the image room to breathe.
For me, the photograph holds both the scale of Lower Manhattan and the clarity of one recognisable landmark. I have returned to New York with my camera many times, and this more distant view offers a different pace of looking. The eye can move from the river through the buildings to the spire, then linger in the sky above the city.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
