Jagged Icelandic Iceberg Reflected in Calm Water Monochrome Wall Art
Glacier Ice and Broad Ripples at Water Level
At water level, the iceberg seemed to rise directly out of its own reflection. I was standing in the lagoon at Jökulsárlón, Iceland, when I photographed this jagged formation in black and white. Its pale ridges stand clearly against the darker sky, while broad foreground ripples make the viewpoint feel close to the surface.
The shape was what held my attention. A high central edge tilts upward, surrounded by smaller peaks, broken-looking sections, and deep seams. Some faces catch light almost evenly; others carry dark markings and strong shadows. I chose monochrome because those differences mattered more to me than color. The ice has a sculptural presence, but every part of it retains its own texture.
The water changes the character of that solid form. Near the iceberg, a soft reflection extends downward in interrupted bands. Closer to the camera, wider ripples cross the frame, becoming a subject in their own right. They give the photograph movement without taking attention away from the ice. The low horizon leaves enough sky for the uneven upper edge to remain distinct.
I remember the quiet of watching the formation drift while the clouds moved overhead. The image holds that encounter through a particular shape and viewpoint rather than a general impression of Iceland. Its square composition and strong tonal range can give a contemporary room an open, elemental presence, with small cracks and surfaces to discover beyond the first striking silhouette.
