Abandoned Iceland Farm Buildings With Graffiti Monochrome Photography
Graffiti Across Weathered Walls Above a Grassy Icelandic Slope
Walking along the Icelandic coast, I found these abandoned farm buildings with graffiti spread across their worn walls. I photographed them from the grassy slope below, where a stripped vehicle body provided a small foreground shape against the larger structures. The wind and open surroundings were part of the experience of standing there. What interested me visually was the contrast between the regular building fronts and the much less ordered surfaces of grass, graffiti, and exposed material.
The long building on the right has a row of dark window openings beneath a corrugated roof. A taller gabled section rises beside it, while another two-storey structure stands further left. Pale patches on the walls sit behind overlapping painted letters and a skull motif. In the foreground, the vehicle shell has exposed parts and a visible steering wheel, its compact outline surrounded by uneven grass. A distant mountain appears at the right edge below the clouded sky, giving the site a wider landscape beyond its walls.
Monochrome draws those layers together without losing their differences. The grass has a soft, repeating texture, the windows create dark rectangles, and the graffiti cuts across the surfaces in curves and outlined letters. I made the photograph in Iceland in 2022, keeping enough of the land and sky to show how the buildings sit within the coast. The result is a landscape shaped by both structures and their visible deterioration, with a small foreground remnant leading the eye toward the larger ruins.
