Flared Cypress Trunks Reflected Beneath Hanging Spanish Moss

The trees have a strong presence here. Their broad bases rise out of pale water, with long roots and smaller pointed forms gathered beside the trunk on the right. Above them, Spanish moss hangs from an intricate network of branches. Morning mist runs through the background in a lighter band, separating one layer of woodland from the next.

I photographed this Louisiana swamp in 2021. I was interested in the weight of the nearer trees and the way the water softened that weight into reflections. The trunk on the left is deeply ridged, while the one to the right leans slightly before spreading into branches. Between them, more cypress appear at different distances, giving the scene a sense of depth without an open horizon.

Black and white makes the bark, moss and water feel closely related. Fine strands stand against pale gaps in the canopy; thicker limbs make darker marks. At the bottom of the photograph, the reflections become long, quiet streaks. I like that change from the crowded detail above to the smoother surface below. It gives the eye somewhere to settle after exploring the branches.

This wetland photograph would work well where a room needs texture within a restrained palette. In a living room or study, it can bring the layered character of a flooded forest into view. It is especially suited to someone who loves cypress landscapes and prefers the subtle greys of mist to stronger seasonal colour.
