Two Small Boats Cross Water Beneath a Nearly Hidden Shore
Two kayakers become small, dark shapes against the pale mist in this Ontario photograph. The water remains textured in the foreground, while the far shore fades into the fog. I’m drawn to the amount of open space around the paddlers. It makes their presence easy to notice without turning the scene into a close view of the activity.
The shore is clearest at the left, where a line of trees rises just above the mist. Farther across, low shapes are only partly visible, with their outlines becoming softer toward the right. I like how the photograph moves between what can be seen and what remains obscured. The paddles and boats provide a few definite lines within that uncertainty. Below them, the rippled water brings a darker, more varied texture, giving the pale sky and fog something to sit above. In black and white, those changes in tone become the main way of reading the scene.
I made this photograph in 2021. For me, the quiet comes from the relationship between the two people and the space around them. They give the view a sense of movement, yet there is no urgency in the picture. As wall art, it may suit a bedroom, cottage or a room used for unwinding. It can speak to someone who enjoys kayaking, Ontario waters or understated landscape photography. I like that it offers a recognisable moment on the water while leaving most of the view open, so the eye has room to pause.
