Weathered Tree Stumps in Still Water Beneath Morning Fog
Weathered stumps rise from still water in this Haliburton beaver pond, their reflections making almost complete shapes beneath them. Beyond the open foreground, low grasses and a distant tree line fade under morning fog. I photographed the wetland in soft colour, keeping its warm water tones and the quieter greens of the woodland in balance.
Beavers had dammed a small creek here, changing the forest into marsh. The remains of trees make that transformation visible. Some stumps have broad, splintered bases; others are smaller fragments or fallen branches lying close to the surface. The water around them is calm enough to carry clear reflections, allowing each irregular piece of wood to become a distinct form. Farther back, the remains are more crowded, leading toward a narrow band of ochre grasses and the darker forest beyond. I like how the scene moves from separate foreground shapes into a much softer, less definite distance.
Made in 2016, this photograph holds a landscape shaped by gradual natural change. The low fog does not erase the place; it gives the far trees a gentle edge and lets the open water remain the clearest part of the view. For someone drawn to Haliburton, quiet wetlands or the sculptural forms of weathered wood, it offers a calm but detailed image. In a bedroom, reading area or home with warm natural materials, the subdued colour can bring a sense of stillness, while the reflected stumps provide shapes to keep discovering within that quiet surface.
