Whenever I arrive in a new city, I look for architecture that gives it a character of its own. At the Lotus Temple in New Delhi, India, I found that character in the sweeping marble petals. This black and white photograph moves close to those forms, letting the curves and stone surface fill most of the frame.
I went late in the day so the sun would be behind the temple, creating the glow I wanted. From this position, the pale sky becomes an open space beside the marble. Light travels across the broad surfaces, while the overlapping sections introduce deeper gray tones and a sense of depth.
Designed by Fariborz Sahba, the Lotus Temple is a Bahá’í House of Worship whose flower-inspired form is built from marble-clad concrete shells. Looking closely reveals a second geometry within that larger design: the joints between individual stone panels bend across the petals, while the marble grain runs in finer, less predictable lines.
That relationship is what holds my attention here. The architecture has a clear, deliberate structure, yet the stone keeps it from feeling mechanical. I chose this tight composition to concentrate on how one curve meets another and how light separates them. For me, discovering a city includes spending time with details like these, where a building’s character becomes visible through its materials as much as its overall shape.
