Historic Judicial Display Within A Medieval Castle Chamber
Inside a stone chamber at Lewes Castle in East Sussex, this iron restraint hangs suspended in quiet stillness against centuries-old masonry. A skeletal figure remains bound within a rigid cage of riveted bands and chains, its posture upright but fixed, the form held in place by mechanisms once intended to restrict movement rather than preserve memory. The curved wall behind it shows the layered erosion of time, with pitted surfaces and fractured mortar catching the light in uneven patches that reveal the structure's age.
Lewes Castle was once the seat of civic authority in the town, and it later became tied to a darker chapter in its judicial history involving a local mayor who was convicted of murder. The prison chambers within the castle were used to detain individuals awaiting trial or punishment, and this suspended cage now serves as a preserved museum display reflecting the methods of incarceration used in earlier centuries. Whether original or reconstructed, the restraint is presented as part of the institutional narrative of justice that once defined this space.
I photographed this installation while walking through the preserved interior of the castle, where exhibits are arranged within the original defensive and judicial architecture. The image captures not only the figure but also the chamber that surrounds it, with chains extending upward into shadow and the foot restraints hovering above the uneven stone floor below.
