One Bright Boat Within the Soft Harbour Reflections
The red rowboat sits alone within a broad field of softly rippled water. Its colour makes an immediate focal point, while the harbour reflections stay muted around it. I like how little else is needed in the frame: the boat, its darker reflection and enough open water to give both some room.
The hull has a clear curved outline, with a few interior details visible above its edge. Thin lines drop from the ends toward the water, and the reflection below breaks slightly with the ripples. Farther back, darker bands cross the upper part of the photograph. They introduce a change in tone without bringing the shoreline itself into view.
I photographed this scene at Martha’s Vineyard in 2009. Keeping the surroundings outside the frame lets the red carry much of the picture, but the water still has its own texture. The fine horizontal ripples soften the reflected hull and spread the pale light around it. I like the contrast between that gentle background and the more definite shape of the boat.
