I was out shooting in a small town with one of Canada’s top bird photographers, someone who knows how to move through the landscape without disturbing it. The owl was perched low, barely above eye level, and perfectly still. No movement, no rush. Just that piercing gaze. What struck me first was the colour—deep golden eyes, soft browns feathered with muted grey and pale rust. Every line was textured. Every tone is grounded. This wasn’t a fast shutter grab; it was a patient exchange.
You don’t pose an owl. You wait, and you respect the moment. This frame came after long stillness—and it only lasted for seconds. But that stare? It holds. Even in print, you’ll feel it in the room.
