Concentric Metal Rings Around a Deep Dark Opening
A circular opening in heavy machinery becomes the center of this black and white abstract photograph. I made the image at an industrial site in Ontario, Canada, concentrating on concentric metal rings against a darker surrounding surface. The close framing leaves the machine’s larger function outside the view and brings its geometry forward.
The broad outer plate contains a loose circle of small holes. Inside it, a raised ring surrounds a deeper opening, with another metal edge visible around the dark center. Those successive circles give the image a clear structure, but their worn surfaces keep them from feeling perfectly smooth or uniform. Pale scuffs and darker patches interrupt the metal throughout.
I was interested in the way light describes depth here. The outer rim catches a lighter band, while the inner recess falls into shadow. A small bright ledge near the bottom provides another point of contrast within the circular arrangement. The surrounding texture is much finer, so the larger rings remain distinct even though the whole image is richly detailed.
This photograph can read first as geometry, then as an object built for practical work. That shift is part of its appeal for me. In an office, studio, or interior with industrial materials, the square composition offers a strong central form and a restrained palette. It carries the weight of old machinery while allowing the abstract pattern to stand on its own.
