Rivets, Headlamp, and Maker’s Plate in Dawson City

The front of this Brooks steam locomotive fills the frame with riveted metal, curved surfaces, and crossing rods. I photographed it in Dawson City, Yukon, choosing black and white to bring out the machinery’s weight and texture. The headlamp projects from the left side of the boiler, while the round builder’s plate provides a small, sharply defined point of reference among the larger forms.

I remember walking slowly around the engine before settling on this angle. Standing beside it during my Yukon travels made the scale of the construction much more apparent than a distant view could. Here, the boiler door, hinges, and heavy fasteners overlap with the rods running across the foreground. The roof structure remains visible above, but I kept the composition close to the engine so that the surrounding space would support the subject without taking over. I wanted the photograph to hold the experience of examining the machine from only a few steps away.

The plate reads Brooks Locomotive Works, Dunkirk, N.Y., with the date 1881. I like having that lettering within a photograph that is otherwise so much about shape. It anchors the subject in a specific maker and year without overwhelming the visual detail. Soft highlights separate the dark metal surfaces, revealing worn edges and the rougher patches around the rivets. For a railway enthusiast or someone drawn to industrial photography, this is an intimate view of the engine’s construction: a sequence of circles, diagonals, and substantial pieces of metal that rewards a slower look.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
