Hamnoy Bridge and Snow Streaked Mountains Black and White Landscape Photography
A Low Span Connects Shorelines Beneath Steep Peaks
The bridge makes a slender line across the water beneath Lofoten’s much larger mountain forms. I photographed this Hamnoy view in Norway in 2023, struck by the difference in scale between the shoreline buildings and the peaks behind them. The wide composition gives the village and bridge a clear place within the surrounding water, while the mountains define the upper half of the scene.
On the right, small waterfront buildings gather along a rocky edge. Their roofs create a low pattern of repeating shapes, with darker structures interspersed among paler walls. Across the bridge, another cluster follows the opposite shore. I like how the low span connects these separate groups without competing with the mountain outline.
The nearest pointed peak rises sharply on the left, its dark rock crossed by narrow streaks of snow. Farther right, snow spreads more broadly across the ridges and gullies. Heavy clouds add another layer above them, with brighter openings providing changes of tone. In the foreground, fine water ripples offer a quieter texture beneath all those substantial forms.
Black and white lets the scene move between architecture, water and mountain through a consistent range of light and shadow. This photograph can bring an expansive northern landscape into a room while retaining the smaller details that make Hamnoy recognisable. I remember being absorbed by the mountains’ scale, and the image keeps that feeling alongside the village’s compact arrangement. The bridge gives the eye a simple route across the view, tying together a landscape that otherwise feels immense.
