Pemaquid Point Lighthouse Above Layered Rocks Black And White Photography
Flowing Stone Patterns Lead Up Towards A Small Lighthouse
The rocks dominate this view of Pemaquid Point, their curved bands and dark seams leading up towards the lighthouse and buildings on the ridge. I photographed the scene from low on the shore in 2018, choosing to give the foreground stone much of the frame. The lighthouse remains a clear landmark, but its smaller scale allows the coastline itself to become an equally important subject.
The stone offers a rich variety of shapes. Some surfaces are rounded and pale, others appear as flatter dark strips, and deeper cracks cut between them. Those changing lines give the eye several routes through the composition before it reaches the buildings above. Trees along the ridge add another rhythm, with their fine branches standing against a comparatively plain sky. In black and white, the brighter rock surfaces and darker seams become especially clear, revealing detail throughout the foreground without relying on colour.
I like the relationship between that intricate natural pattern and the simple upright form of the tower. It brings the lighthouse into its setting, with the keeper’s buildings helping to show the scale of the surrounding stone. For someone who enjoys Maine coastal photography, this print offers a view that can be explored at different distances: the broad sweep of the shoreline is apparent first, then the bands, cracks and rounded surfaces invite a closer look. It suits a study, living room or coastal interior where strong natural texture can become a lasting point of interest.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
