A Pale Tower And Picket Fence Above The Atlantic
The pale tower at Pemaquid Point stands beside the keeper’s house, with a white picket fence linking the buildings along the low coastal ground. I liked the quiet balance of this Maine view: the lighthouse provides a clear upright form, the house extends the scene to the right, and the open Atlantic gives it space on the left. The darker foreground helps the pale structures stand out without a dramatic sky.
Small details give the buildings their individual character. The lantern and its surrounding railing form a dark cap above the tower, while narrow windows break up the masonry. Beside it, the house has rooflines, chimneys and evenly spaced windows that create a more domestic rhythm. A short row of trees behind the house adds texture at the edge of the scene.
The fence is a useful line in the composition. It holds the buildings together visually and marks a gentle boundary between their pale surfaces and the darker ground. Beyond, the sea and distant horizon remain subdued, allowing the architecture to retain attention.
I photographed this view in 2018 and presented it in black and white to emphasise those relationships. It is a lighthouse image with a settled coastal mood, offering detail in the tower and house while keeping the surrounding space simple. For someone who enjoys Maine travel photography or maritime architecture, it makes an understated print for a study, living room or coastal home.
