A Tall Lighthouse Beside the Sun and Island Palms
An orange sky surrounds the lighthouse at Dry Tortugas, with the low sun resting beside a group of palms. The tower rises clearly above the island’s dark shoreline, while rippled water catches the light below. This coastal photograph concentrates on a few simple elements—lighthouse, sun, palms and sea—held together by the evening colour.
I like the tower’s position in the scene. Its narrow vertical shape gives the broad sky a strong centre without obscuring the sun nearby. The lantern at the top remains finely outlined, and the lower wall is still visible against the darker strip of land. Around it, the palms introduce smaller, irregular silhouettes that keep the island from becoming a plain horizontal line.
The water supplies the photograph’s movement. Reflected gold breaks into short bright marks among the darker ripples, carrying the sunset toward the foreground. Above, thin cloud bands give the orange sky subtle variation. There is a clear difference between the quiet outline of the lighthouse and the more changeable light around it.
I made this photograph in 2012. Viewed across the water, the island feels both near enough to recognise and separate from where I stood. It is a piece for someone drawn to Florida coastal scenery, lighthouse photography or warm sunset art. The lasting appeal for me is the balance between the tower’s steady shape and the light that will soon leave the sky.
