Weathered Boards Leading Toward a Quiet Maine Lighthouse
A narrow wooden walkway leads straight through the grass to Curtis Island Lighthouse near Camden, Maine. The white entrance, round tower and dark lantern form a simple centre against open water and a pale sky. In black and white, this coastal photograph rests on the contrast between the small building and the weathered boards approaching it.
I like the modest scale of the scene. The lighthouse has a practical, unshowy presence, with its windowed door beneath a triangular roof and a railing circling the lantern above. Grass and scattered rocks remain close around it. The water lies behind as a quiet horizontal band, giving the tower space without making the coast feel empty.
The walkway is what brings me into the photograph each time. Its worn grain is distinct in the foreground, then becomes finer as the boards converge toward the door. That change in scale gives an immediate sense of distance. At the lower edge, a pair of rounded stones offers a softer shape beside all those straight lines.
I made this Maine photograph in 2009. The monochrome treatment holds the scene together through small differences in texture: painted masonry, rough wood, grass and calm water. For someone who enjoys lighthouses or understated New England coastal photography, it offers a view that feels approachable rather than grand. The strongest invitation is simply to follow the boards toward the little doorway.
