Mont St. Michel at low tide

Mont-Saint-Michel is the most visited site in France outside of Paris, with two and a half million yearly visitors.  The Mont Saint-Michel is situated on the border of the Brittany and Normandy regions.

The iconic island, with over one thousand years of history, has about 50 shops, restaurants, and hotels.  What is interesting, however, is that only around 45 people sleep there on any given night, including the monks and nuns that reside in the Abbey!

On Mont-Saint-Michel, the Abbey is at the top, houses belonging to the nobility, shops below the Abbey, and the homes of fishermen and peasants outside its walls.
