A Burgundy Bicycle Beneath Red Marks on Worn Plaster
A burgundy bicycle rests against a worn wall in Florence, with red graffiti spread across the plaster above it. I photographed the scene straight on, keeping the bicycle near the lower part of the square frame and leaving room for the wall’s colour and texture. The image brings an everyday Italian street detail into a clear, unhurried view.
The bicycle’s thin frame and round wheels stand out against a surface full of irregular marks. Its curved top tube, dark saddle, and rear rack give it a recognisable shape, while the wheel spokes add finer lines close to the pavement. I like how that precise outline sits within the much less orderly pattern behind it.
The wall moves between pale cream, ochre, grey, and exposed rough patches. Red lettering and a circular mark make a stronger contrast, picking up the warmth of the bicycle without matching it exactly. A narrow wooden door on the left adds another vertical shape, with weathering of its own.
Below, the pavement provides a simple horizontal base. Its joints and curb keep the scene connected to the street, even though no passerby enters the frame.
I wanted to preserve the arrangement as I noticed it: a familiar means of transport, a painted wall, and the small details that make this particular corner of Florence distinct. The photograph rewards attention to both the whole scene and its quieter features, from the bicycle’s delicate lines to the different layers visible in the plaster.
