A Flat Topped Island Beneath Broad Cloud Layers
A solid block of rock sits in an otherwise open sea. Sheep Island, off County Antrim in Northern Ireland, has a shape that I find immediately striking: a low, almost level top above a steep, textured face. In this black and white photograph, that simple outline carries much of the scene.
The smaller rocks nearer the camera give the island a useful companion. One rises as a jagged pale mass, while another lies lower across the water. Their uneven shapes contrast with the larger island behind them. I like the spaces between these pieces of land, where the sea becomes a quiet surface and allows each form to remain distinct.
Above the horizon, the clouds build in broad layers. A dark band crosses the middle of the sky, with lighter areas overhead and near the sea. Those changing tones bring movement to the upper part of the photograph without taking attention away from the island. Below, the restrained water texture keeps the view calm and gives the cliffs room to show their vertical markings.
I made this coastal photograph in 2019. What mattered to me was the arrangement of a few strong forms within a great deal of open space. The scene holds together through the island, the smaller rocks and the cloud layers, rather than a busy shoreline. It offers a quiet but substantial coastal image for someone drawn to Northern Ireland or the sculptural character of sea cliffs.
