Medieval Cistercian Ruins Beneath a Wide Irish Sky

Some ruins need no dramatic light. Hore Abbey, near Cashel in County Tipperary, had enough presence on its own. I photographed the medieval stone complex in black and white beneath a broad overcast sky, letting its broken walls, central tower, arches, and rough masonry carry the image.

My wife and I came across the abbey while travelling through Ireland in 2019, only about a 15-minute walk from the much better-known Rock of Cashel. That contrast stayed with me. The Rock draws the attention, yet just beyond it sits this extraordinary ruin in the open countryside, quieter and far less imposing in the way it announces itself.

The photograph is built around that sense of isolation. A wide field separates me from the structure, while the empty sky gives the abbey room to stand almost as a piece of sculpture. The surviving walls still reveal the shape of the original Gothic church, but sections have collapsed into irregular stone forms. In black and white, those textures become more pronounced: weathered blocks, dark openings, broken rooflines, and the soft grass surrounding them.

Hore Abbey began as a Benedictine monastery before passing to the Cistercians in the 13th century, becoming the last pre-Reformation Cistercian foundation in Ireland. I find that history interesting, but what held me photographically was simpler—the scale of the ruin, the silence around it, and the way centuries of decay had left the architecture damaged without stripping it of its presence.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
