Weathered Steel Wheels Recede Through a Hamilton Yard
I made this photograph in a railway yard in Hamilton, Ontario, where row after row of railcar wheels created a pattern that changed as I moved. I spent time looking for an angle that would bring the nearest wheel forward while allowing the others to recede behind it. Working low and keeping the frame tight gave the circular forms room to overlap, turning a busy industrial subject into a study of repetition and depth.
The closest wheels occupy much of the foreground, their broad faces broken by dark patches and rough surface marks. Bright rims trace their edges, while the projecting axle ends introduce smaller cylinders among the larger curves. Further back, similar shapes become more closely packed. I liked the way each wheel remained distinct even as the rows began to merge into a dense arrangement of arcs, shadows, and small areas of reflected light.
Black and white draws attention to those differences in the steel. The worn surfaces absorb light unevenly, and the sharper edges stand out against the dark spaces between the wheelsets. There is very little surrounding yard in the picture; the wheels themselves establish its scale and rhythm. For me, the interest came from finding an ordered composition within all that material. It is an industrial photograph built around tangible texture and repeated forms, with enough variation in each surface to keep the pattern from becoming uniform.
