Indiana Abandoned Farmhouse Beneath Dark Clouds Black and White Photography
Exposed Timber and Broken Rooflines Across an Overgrown Field
On a rural road in Indiana, I came across this large farmhouse standing beneath a heavy sky. Its exposed structure and broken roof had a strong presence against the low clouds. I photographed it in 2007, on a moody day when the weather suited the old building’s condition. What drew me in was the scale of the house and the amount of its construction that had become visible as the exterior weathered away.
Across the front, missing siding reveals long upright studs and diagonal supports. Dark openings interrupt the remaining boards, while the centre gable still gives the facade a clear outline. The roof slopes away to either side, with loose and missing shingles breaking its surface. Two brick chimneys remain above it. I find the relationship between that surviving shape and the damaged details especially compelling: the house is still substantial, even as individual sections become open to view.
Tall grass fills the foreground around a fallen piece of fencing. Its angled rails lead toward the farmhouse, adding another layer of texture beneath the timber and roof. Black and white brings the worn materials and the darker sky into a common tonal range, allowing the building’s lines to remain the focus. This photograph holds the weathered character of a rural American structure in a direct, detailed composition. It offers a strong architectural subject for someone drawn to abandoned places, old farm buildings and the quieter landscapes of Indiana.
