Low Rooflines Beneath Layered Clouds and Overhead Wires

A row of small homes stretches across this South Whitley, Indiana photograph, beneath a sky filled with layered clouds. I encountered the scene while exploring the town, and the repeating rooflines gave me a way to organize the view. Each house has a slightly different frontage, but their modest scale links them together. The broad grass verge and road in the foreground keep a little distance between the viewer and the buildings, making the row easy to take in as a whole.

Above the homes, overhead wires draw long lines across the sky. Several descend from the tall pole near the left of the frame, crossing the clouds at different angles before meeting the buildings below. I find that network as much a part of the scene as the houses themselves. In black and white, it becomes a fine linear pattern against the soft grey sky. The pale facades, darker roofs and small windows give the lower part of the image a more solid rhythm.

This photograph preserves an everyday view of South Whitley from 2007. Its appeal for me lies in the arrangement of familiar things: houses, grass, utility poles and a road. There is no single grand building demanding attention, so the eye can move freely along the row. As a print, it would sit comfortably among American small town photographs or offer a quieter architectural subject within a monochrome collection.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
