Stepped Masonry Walls and a Dark Bay Beneath Trees

The service station’s pale masonry frontage stands against a dense line of trees. A low roof covers the entrance at the left, while a larger dark garage opening occupies the right. I photographed this abandoned Indiana building in 2007. The contrast between its solid wall surfaces and open, shadowed doorways gives the scene a direct architectural appeal within an ordinary rural roadside setting.

The top of the facade steps down toward the sides, creating an unusual outline above the simpler openings below. Fine joints repeat through the masonry, and worn patches break up the lighter surface. I like the way those small textures remain visible within the building’s broad, compact shape. Two narrow poles and a taller central upright add vertical lines across the frontage.

Around the entrance, a small pitched roof projects from the wall. Dark window and door openings sit beneath it, separated by pale supports. The garage bay has a much larger scale, drawing attention to the depth inside the building. Loose material at its base and small plants along the front give the lower edge a more irregular pattern.

Black and white brings the pale walls forward against the darker foliage. The roadway leaves a simple open foreground, allowing the entire facade to remain readable. As a print, this photograph offers a close view of an abandoned service building, suited to someone interested in old garages, roadside architecture and the understated character of rural Indiana places.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
