A Direct Gaze Beside A Softly Receding Interior
Her expression is direct and subdued, with the eyes carrying most of the portrait’s attention. I photographed this young girl in Coonoor, India, in black and white. I kept her toward the left of the horizontal frame so the rough wall and softly receding interior would remain part of the encounter.
I was drawn to the restraint of her expression. There is no large smile or gesture to explain the moment. The gaze stays clear, while a small hair clip, earrings and necklace offer quieter details around the face. Her neatly arranged dark hair creates a distinct outline above the lighter clothing.
The patterned shirt brings finer decoration into the lower part of the frame. Behind her, shelves and indistinct objects suggest an everyday setting without becoming fully described. That difference in sharpness keeps the person first while allowing the environment to contribute.
I wanted black and white to concentrate attention on the eyes, expression and changes in texture. The wall has a rougher surface than the face, and the background holds deeper tones than the pale fabric. For me, the horizontal composition gives the portrait enough room to remain connected to where I found her. The small details reward looking longer, but the direct gaze stays the clearest part of the image and the one I continue to return to.
