Bright Catchlights And A Small Smile In Close View
His eyes are the clearest point in this close portrait, with small catchlights bringing the gaze forward. I photographed the young boy in India in black and white, keeping his face large within the vertical frame. A slight smile adds another bright detail beneath the eyes.
I like the balance between that direct look and the softer areas around it. Dark hair frames the forehead, while the checked shirt and shoulders gradually lose definition. The shallow depth of field leaves a suggestion of the setting without giving it equal weight.
The portrait depends on small changes in tone rather than a complicated background. Light moves gently across the forehead and cheeks, and the darker pupils and hair give the face structure. His teeth appear within the smile, a small shape that keeps the expression from feeling entirely serious.
I wanted the photograph to preserve the immediacy of looking back at one another. The close view makes the exchange clear, while the soft shirt and surroundings leave room for the eyes to hold attention. Black and white brings skin, hair and fabric into a restrained arrangement. What remains for me is a particular expression encountered in India, with enough facial detail to reward a closer look and a directness that stays apparent from across a room.
