Elderly Woman With Walking Stick India Street Photography

A Raised Hand Against a Pattern of Shutter Lines

A loose strand of silver hair crosses her face, and her raised hand partly covers a small smile. I made this black and white portrait during my travels through southern India in 2010. The woman stands in front of a metal shutter, with a walking stick upright beside her and part of a bicycle at the edge.

The encounter unfolded on the street, and the brief expression held my attention more than the surroundings. Her eyes look toward me, while the hand introduces a gesture that is difficult to explain completely. I prefer to leave that uncertainty within the portrait rather than assign her a feeling the photograph cannot establish.

The patterned shawl creates a flowing shape around her shoulders. Behind it, the shutter's repeated horizontal bands provide a more rigid rhythm, crossed by the straight walking stick. I kept enough of her figure in the frame to make the gesture part of a wider posture. The bicycle helps locate the encounter within an ordinary street without becoming its main subject.

Monochrome brings the light hair, darker patterned fabric and fine texture of her hands together. The portrait is carried by a particular person rather than an idea about age or circumstance. For me, its appeal lies in that balance of direct eye contact and an ambiguous, fleeting gesture. It gives a study or living space a strong human presence while leaving room for the viewer's own response.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
